WHAT is the point of having a meeting to find a solution for the pollution affecting Aman Perdana residents – when certain parties involved are not taking it seriously?

That is the question hurled by a furious Kapar MP, S. Manikavasagam – who spoke out against the Department of Environment (DoE) for sending a rookie officer to Monday’s meeting.

Manikavasagam said the officer admitted to being clueless on the issue, explaining that she was new on the job. “What is the DoE trying to prove? It sends an officer who does not know what is going on, does not come prepared and is of no help at all.

“How are we to solve this issue if this is the case?”

The clearly irked Manikavasagam also spoke out against State executive councillor for Environment, Consumer Affairs and Tourism Elizabeth Wong – who did not turn up for the meeting.

“It is not my job to chair this meeting but since the council requested me to, I am here. What is the State exco member doing? This is her jurisdiction and she or her representative should be present. I am truly very disappointed,” added the MP.

Wong, on the other hand was shocked when asked to comment to her absence at the meeting.

She said: “I did not get an invitation and I did not know that there was a meeting being held. I grilled my staff and they assured me that no invitation was sent. In fact, I was pushing Manikavasagam to hold the meeting.”

In the meantime, representatives from all the factories situated close to the Aman Perdana area attended the meeting.

They stood firm behind claims that they were following DoE guidelines and were not to be blamed for the pollution. The factories were there before the housing development was built.

The blame was then hurled back to the developer, Intramewah Development Sdn Bhd and the Town Planning Department for approving the project – but the discussion made no progress due to the absence of  representatives from the State executive council and DoE.

A resident of Aman Perdana when contacted expressed disgust over the issue.

“This is the first meeting and it clearly shows how irresponsible the State government is about our welfare. The residents are the victims here. The State should go after those who approved the project without a buffer zone,” he said.

Malay Mail highlighted the Aman Perdana issue on April 29 after it was raised by Manikavasagam, who received numerous complaints from the residents in the area.

On May 10, Wong visited the area and gave the authorities six months to solve the pollution problem at Aman Perdana.
