What is the best way to get to the Indian voter? It appears both the MIC and PKR think alike: organise a concert and distribute DVDs and VCDs.
The MIC began distributing a DVD containing dances and songs today. Interspersed were exhortations and remarks by party president Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu on why the 3,375 Indian voters in Permatang Pauh should support Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah.
Samy Vellu told the NST: “In the DVD, I have given strong reasons why the Indian community must stick with the BN and what the BN has achieved.”
Samy Vellu’s message is that the BN is the best choice for Malaysia as it has a track record that cannot be matched.
He said during his rounds, he found that Indian voters were more receptive now compared to the campaign period before the March 8 general election. He was confident the Indian votes would go to the BN.
Apart from house-to-house campaiging, dinners with constituents and a concert, he said the distribution of the DVD would help get the message across.
MIC workers were giving away the DVD free as part of the house-to-house campaign.
Meanwhile, Pakatan Keadilan Rakyat is distributing VCDs of local events, such as temple demolitions and the show of strength by the authorities, during its house-to-house campaigns.
The PKR’s by-election programme coordinator for Indian voters, S. Manikavasagam said the distribution of these VCDs had proven effective during the general election and he hoped it would have the same effect this time too.
PKR, he said, had been stressing that its candidate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the best man to lead the country as he was championing the cause of all races, including the Indian community, which Manikavasagm said, had been neglected for too long.
Manikavasagm, who is also Kapar MP, said the party was organising a cultural night at Persiaran Sembilang in Seberang Jaya at 7.30pm tomorrow. Local artistes will take to the stage. Apart from Anwar, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is also expected to speak.
The MIC has also organised a similar concert at the same time tomorrow. It will be held at the Dewan Sri Mariamman along Jalan Mengkuang. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Samy Vellu are expected to be present.
