Letter : Malaysian Indian Dilemma on Fellow Malaysian Eye
Letter received via email, republished with permission for public awareness
Dear YB S. Manikavasagam
I read your letter on “Malaysian Indians and Reasons for their Problems” via Malaysia Today which led me to your website.
Your article is brutally honest and a painful revelation to many who refuses to acknowledge the truth. I am a Malaysian Chinese who empathise with Indians who have been left behind by our education system. I am also sorry to say that like many others who have become apathetic to situations in Malaysia, I have not done anything for my fellow Indian Malaysians.
I totally agree with every single point you have made and in fact many, many years ago, my husband and I discussed Tamil schools dilemma and we both have the same opinions as in your article altho I must say we did not know then nor understand the big picture as was so clearly presented in your article. We are just ordinary citizens without authority to access statistical data of our beloved country. It is so sad that MIC who professes to help Indians did not try to help their fellow Indians and like you said, due to personal political and career interests, many ordinary Indians citizens have been “lead” into wayward ways due to lack of skills after graduating from schools at whatever level. Who are responsible if not the politicians and people in power and authority?? What I want to say is if we ordinary Chinese can see the problems so many years ago, what about the very people who have been elected to certain positions and should be able to help alleviate the standard of living of the Indian community? Why didn’t they do anything to help their own community??? It’s so sad.
Again I agree with you that Tamil schools shouldn’t be compared with Chinese schools. You have explained it so well.
My purpose of writing to you is to let you know you have the support of your fellow Malaysians and I thank you for having the courage to present the ugly truth to the public and the people in power. I believe we all know the problem of the Indian community, a big problem which have been swept under the carpet for 50 years and it takes a courageous man to bring it up. You know and I know that there will be a huge outcry from people whose positions and political livelihood are affected by your writings but for the general well being of the Indian community I hope you will persevere through the many storms that lie ahead and hold steadfast to your righteous beliefs.
I congratulate you for your success in life despite the hardship you grew up in and I wish you every success in your new role and I hope that the Indian community realise what a friend they have in you.
