Also check MP Klang Press Statement
I was taken back by Deputy Prime Minister statement after reading Malaysiakini news as below:
“While the public was increasingly worried by the rise in crime, statistics however showed that the crime rate in Malaysia was far lower than Japan and Hong Kong, said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today.
“Based on the statistics given by the police, it indicates that the crime rate in Malaysia is lower than Japan and Hong Kong.
“It is also just slightly higher than Singapore to the basis of per hundred thousand of population… but the perception of the public is not the case,” said Najib at a press conference in Parliament after the economic council meeting.
“We understand that the police have been working seriously, but there are still matters that can be undertaken to improve the perception of the police, and measures can be taken to improve the confidence of the people on the police and the safety of the country,” he added.
Najib also said that the high crime rate was one of the main issues discussed at the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
He added that the council had informed Inspector General Police Musa Hassan that Malaysians were hoping for the police to increase their efficiency.
The meeting also discussed the confidence of the business sector and tourists regarding the safety situation in the country, said Najib.
“So we have to deal with the figures released… it has to be somehow be accepted and believable by the public.
“Secondly we have to increase the level of confidence of the people towards the role of the police,” he said.
Does that means we Malaysian should allow more crime to take place in order for us to be in par with Hongkong and Japan.
It’s shameful that our Police still lack behing our southern neighbour where Malaysian form part of the crime prevention authority.
Statistics reflect histrocial event , it has nothing to do with current happening. Just look how a couple of teenageers high on drug killed two innocent people and injured few others last week in Klang. What has the police done so far?
Police must PREVENT Crime or any thing against law to take place not just merely going or searching for criminals after the indicent happened. What has the police done on Crime Preventions actitivies during 2008 ? They only managed to scare innocent public away for the sake of few so called leaders like holding on people wearing T-shirts with slogans which they don’t like to see.
Statistics that police provide to Najib does that include cases that gone under the table or upto date reported and unreported crime. What is the definition of CRIME does Najib and Police has on their book. Probably someone blasted with c4 may not be crime for them but five people standing in a place consider as serious crime.
The statistics may also reveal that more Malaysian arrested for participating in peaceful gathering then others been compare with.
Based on crime statistics , Malaysia’s crime rate in 2007 is 772 cases for every 100,000 population. Singapore’s crime rate is 740.7 cases for every 100,000 population, Hong Kong’s is 1,166, Japan’s is 1,569, Australia’s is 4,470 and Rome’s is 8,341.
It’s not the numbers of Crime that taken place, It’s TYPE of Crime that Happening in Malaysia now. More Brutal Killing or Murders , Missing Childrens or kidnapping , prostutitions, theft that alaraming worried public . If we follow Deputy Prime Minister or IGP advise the country can accomodate at least 400 cases of Murder for every 100,000 before they got red signal on and ask police to work.
Probably the table above may signal RED of the eyes IGP and Prime Minister. Will they emulate Indian Home Minister taking responsibilities on rising crime and alarming signal and allow those really capable to bring our nation heaven to live on.
Malaysian need police force that can prevent Traffice Jams from Happening rather than being at the signal and directing vehicle after the Jams went haywire. So, if you need to be on top of mount Kinabalu be there and deliver you’re capable reducing crime.
