Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has been taken to task by Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam for not showing up at the areas devastated by Monday’s freak storm.

Manikavasagam yesterday questioned why Khalid did not visit the victims, saying he was also upset that his numerous messages to Khalid’s mobile phone were ignored.

“Khalid must go to the ground to see for himself the destruction caused by the storm and not rely on second hand information. I was not able to answer the people when they asked when Khalid would visit them,” he told Malay Mail.

“The State executive councillors should also be here to look into the plight of the rakyat whose houses and belongings were blown away … but they seem more interested in their meetings. Frankly speaking, the Selangor government has failed in its duty.

The least the leaders could do is to show their concern for the people by turning up.”

Asked about aid for the victims, Manikavasagam said there was no allocation from the State government for such emergencies.

“The state has yet to reimburse us for the programmes we carried out since March this year,” he said.

Manikavasagam also said the Welfare Services Department has been providing meals for the residents since Monday.

“It has opened community halls for the victims, but none have taken shelter there as the people are more concerned about the safety of their properties and belongings,” he said.

The storm, which broke about 2pm, lasted three hours and damaged some 1,500 houses in Taman Eng Ann, Jalan Kapar, Jalan Jadi, Jalan Teluk Gedung Kecil, Jalan Sungei Udang, Jalan Hasan, Jalan Sungei Bertek, and Jalan Tepi Sungai.

Of the total, nearly 60 had their roofs blown away.

“Thank God the storm occurred on a holiday. The people affected were able to move some of their belongings out when the flood waters started to rise,” he said.

Manikavasagam thanked the Klang Municipal Council and the Fire and Rescue Department personnel who worked through the night to clear trees that fell on houses and onto the roads.

Better to act than to pretend, says Khalid
    September 04, 2008 Categories: News

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was unperturbed when asked why he did not visit the families affected by Monday’s freak storm in Klang.

It was better to act and deliver assistance, he said, than to pretend to be concerned about the matter.

“I take a professional view, rather than a political one. The issue is whether going to the ground will solve the problems or whether it will be more beneficial to seek ways to assist the victims and how to implement them,” he said.

Khalid said the State wanted to ensure that the funds, which would be substantial, would be used to rebuild the roofs of houses that were blown away and the damaged units.

“We will ensure there will be enough materials for this purpose and we would like the community to help each other in rebuilding their neighbours’ homes. My concern is that the people want relief measures to be implemented immediately.

“However, since this is an emergency, I cannot agree to help without proper discussions, and how to go about it,” he said.

Khalid also brushed aside criticism by the MP for Kapar, S. Manikavasagam, on his no show at the storm-affected areas in Klang.

State Education, Higher Education and Human Development Committee tee chairman Dr Halimah Ali and Welfare and Women’s Affairs, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Rodziah Ismail announced yesterday that the State Government would help alleviate the burden of some 1,500 families affected by the storm with aid channelled through the Welfare Department, district office and local elected representatives. The army would also be asked to help rebuild damaged houses.

Rodziah, who is also Batu Tiga State assemblyman, said: “I will be chairing a meeting with the representatives from the army today to ensure that repairs to the houses are completed by the end of Ramadan.

“We have also discovered that the basic necessities of the people have also been damaged, including clothes and school books, and we welcome all contributions from the people and aid from NGOs.”

She also urged the Federal Government to play its part in helping to rebuild the damaged houses.

Dr Halimah, the assemblyman for Selat Kelang, said the State had sent a team to determine the extent of the damage.

“Nine contractors have also been tasked to help the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) clear the streets of fallen trees,” she added.

Khalid gets flak over no show

    2008/09/04

SHAH ALAM: The menteri besar yesterday was criticised by a member of his own party for not visiting victims of Monday’s storm in Kapar. Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Kapar member of parliament S. Manikavasagam yesterday said he was disappointed with Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Over 1,200 homes in Rantau Panjang and Selat Klang were damaged in the storm.

Manikavasagam said many people were struggling to cope and needed immediate help.

He pointed out that Rural and Regional Development Minister Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib found the time to visit.

“If Muhammad Taib could find the time, I don’t see why Abdul Khalid could not.”

Abdul Khalid brushed aside the criticism, saying his time was better served organising aid for the victims rather than going to the scene.

“The question is what would I have achieved, besides political mileage, by visiting the victims when there was greater need to organise aid.”

Speaking after the weekly state executive council meeting, Abdul Khalid said this was better than going to the ground and pretending to care.

The state yesterday announced that funds and material would be made available to help the 5,000 victims repair their homes which were damaged in the storm.
