Regarding Khalid

MPs and State Assemblymen have differing views on MB’s Kapar stand
State Assemblymen and MPs were divided on whether Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid should turun padang.
Khalid had said on Wednesday it was better to act and deliver help rather than to pretend to be concerned about the storm that ripped Kapar and affected the lives of some 5,000.
Kapar MP S. Manika-vasagam lashed out at Khalid for not visiting the affected areas to assess the damage.
Malay Mail spoke with several Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional leaders for their take on Khalid’s stand.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, who is also MCA secretary-general, said MCA will send their team.
Datuk M. Saravanan, Deputy Minister of Federal Territories, said he wanted a clearer picture of the situation in Kapar before commenting. However, attempts to get him later failed.
Loh Gwo Burne, Kelana Jaya MP:
“A two-pronged approach should have been taken. Visiting those affected would have a calming and re-assuring effect. It provides confidence that their welfare will be looked into.
“The first thing a lot of world leaders would do in the event of a disaster is to go down for a quick look.
“Look at China for example. The president himself went to see how the people could be helped.
“Khalid should go down to the ground and it is still not too late for him to do so.”
Hannah Yeoh, Subang Jaya assemblyman:
“Exco members have already gone down to the ground and assistance is already being provided.
“I have seen the MB attending functions and to other matters.
“He has done that several times in my constituency. I am sure he has his reasons for not being in Kapar.”
Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar, Selangor councillor for health, estate workers, poverty and caring government:
“It’s not a matter of whether the MB is going down to the ground or not. It’s whether the problems of the people are being solved.
“Exco members have gone to Kapar and reported back. Substantial funds are being moved to help those affected.”
Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, Minister of Housing and Local Government:
“People expect their leaders to comfort them. Going to the affected area will tell you immediately what needs to be done, even if your reps are already there.”
Pakatan Rakyat must be seen to be caring

The Selangor Menteri Besar has continued to come under fire from party members for not showing up at the scene of a freak storm in Kapar where the homes of more than 5,000 people were affected.
On Monday, some 1,500 homes were damaged, including roofs being blown off. It also caused massive flooding in several areas in Klang.
S. Manikavasagam, MP for Kapar, continued lambasting Khalid saying: “As the head of the State government his presence at the scene was important. It is not one or two houses that were affected. Over 1,000 houses were damaged and it is proper for the MB to turn up to lend moral support to the victims instead of sitting in his office and planning.”
Malay Mail quoted Khalid yesterday as saying that the issue was whether going to the ground would solve the problems or would it be more beneficial to seek ways to assist the victims.
A high-ranking member of Pas from Selat Klang, who preferred to remain anonymous, supported Manikavasagam’s displeasure as he felt that the new government should not only portray that it is a caring government but must also be seen to be caring.
“I don’t see how the Pakatan Rakyat can be seen to be caring because Barisan leaders were first at the scene dishing out aid to victims in the affected area,” he added.
On the same note, Manikavasagam added that all those affected by the freak storm would receive aid, including cash, by tomorrow.
This was decided yesterday at a meeting chaired by the State Exco for Welfare, Women Affairs and Science Technology and Innovation Roziah Ismail and attended by the Klang District Officer, village heads and other agencies.
Manikavasagam, who was also at the meeting, urged the relevant agencies to expedite aid as most of the victims were living without a roof over their heads and it was still raining everyday.
He added the aid for the food victims included RM300 for each family and basic essential items such as rice, milk and cooking oil among others. He called on victims to register themselves.
There will also be ‘gotong royong’ tomorrow involving some 300 volunteers from government agencies and PKR and Pas members.
“They will repair houses damaged by the flood and storm,” he said, adding that the fittings and equipment will be provided by the Klang Municipal Council and State government.
Most of the victims were either putting up with friends or family members in the area whose houses have not been affected.
