SELANGOR JOINS THE WORLD CITIES IN EARTH HOUR

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is proud to announce its participation in the global Earth Hour event. At 8:30pm on Saturday, 28th March 2009, millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour as a symbol of our collective commitment to tackle the problem of climate change.
As the government of Malaysia’s most developed state, we take very seriously our contribution to this global problem and our responsibility to work towards a solution. We are also happy to say that state subsidiaries have also expressed their commitment with the state and all major buildings and shopping complexes will be participating.

Turning off our lights for one hour is a small gesture, but it is a demonstration that millions of people around the world are willing to work together to save our climate and pass on a healthy planet to future generations.

The state will make such lasting changes by reducing the impacts of our everyday consumption: using less electricity or using energy more efficiently, walking or cycling instead of driving, taking public transport instead of private vehicles, and, preserving the integrity of our forests and natural environment.

Selangor views this as a form of prudent investment for the future generations, which is why, part of the state’s stimulus package includes a mass transport plan and our new state policies emphasise conservation of environmentally sensitive areas.

A year ago, the people of Selangor voted for change and we hope that they will join us in demonstrating our commitment to be responsible caretakers of our environment. This Saturday, let Selangor be counted amongst those who vote for the Earth by turning off their lights for one hour.

MENTERI BESAR OF SELANGOR
TAN SRI ABDUL KHALID IBRAHIM
