KLANG: The Selangor executive council is divided over the decision to suspend Ampang Jaya municipal council deputy president Hamid Hussain over the demolition of a temple. State executive councillor Iskandar Abdul Samad said he was shocked to learn that Hamid (picture) had been suspended.

In a statement sent by SMS, he said such a major decision should have been made collectively by the state exco and not by a few people.

“Although the demolition was sensitive, state officers acting in good faith should not be victimised. Suspending Hamid puts all officers in a difficult position. Should they act on anything that contravenes the law or just close one eye as it is not politically correct to act?” he asked

He also feared the suspension would demoralise government officers in Selangor.

Iskandar’s colleague Ronnie Liu, who revealed Hamid’s suspension on Monday, said a committee comprising state executive councillors Dr Xavier Jayakumar, Teresa Kok and himself, Teratai assemblywoman Janice Lee and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamarudin would be leading the investigations into the demolition.

Liu also announced that the state government had decided to allocate a new plot of land to rebuild the Hindu temple.

He said the temple’s management would be notified of the new location, which is near the current site, soon.

On allocations for places of worship, Liu said the yearly amount for non-Muslim places of worship had been increased from RM3 million to RM5 million, while mosques and surau get RM120 million.
